About This Site

Where this information comes from, who wrote it, and what you should know before you trust it.

Kanab is one of those places where the people who live here tend to become obsessive about it. Guides who came for a season and never left. Hikers who visited once and came back six times. Photographers who know the light at White Pocket at 6am in October is different from the light at 7am, and will tell you about it at length.

This site is built from that kind of knowledge.

The guides and regulars who contributed here have collectively spent thousands of days in this landscape — leading trips, scouting roads, getting stuck in sand, watching the Milky Way rise over the Vermilion Cliffs, and answering the same questions travelers ask over and over. At some point it seemed worth writing it all down in one place.

A few things worth knowing before you read anything here

Some contributors work for tour companies in the area. We've done our best to keep the content honest anyway — recommending DIY options when they make sense, naming multiple operators when multiple operators are genuinely good, and flagging when a place isn't worth the drive. If a guide says you probably don't need to hire anyone for a particular hike, they mean it.

Not everything here will age perfectly. Permit systems change. Roads wash out. New tours open and old ones close. If you find something outdated, or if you've been out here recently and know something we don't — we'd genuinely like to hear from you. There's a submission form below if you want to contribute.

The goal is simple: help you spend less time researching and more time outside.
